1. About RRC on FMD:
The Regional Research Centre on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (RRC on FMD), Department of Veterinary Microbiology, College of Veterinary Sciences, LUVAS, Hisar was originally established in 1968 in the Department of Bacteriology and Hygiene, COVS, CCS HAU Hisar as one of the FMD virus typing units by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. Later on in 1971, the project was revised as All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on FMD. The Hisar Centre was upgraded to RRC on FMD as one of eight regional centres all across India. In the year 2001, the AICRP on FMD was upgraded to Project Directorate on FMD, with headquarters at Mukteswar, Uttarakhand, then Directorate of FMD and now National Institute on FMD (ICAR-NIFMD) with its headquarters at ICAR-International Centre on FMD, Arugul, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Presently, RRC on FMD is catering to the needs of northern states of the country, viz. Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh & Uttarakhand, and the union territories of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Chandigarh, and Delhi. Considering the importance of FMD and Brucellosis, the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) has been launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister with a total outlay of Rs. 13,343.00 crores for five years (2019-24). The scheme has now been revised to the Livestock Animal Health and Disease Control Programme under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India.
