About
Poultry Section, Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding is maintaining about 6000 birds of layer, broiler and desi chickens. At present, there are six different breeds/strains viz., Harlay (layer), Broiler Dam Line, CARI-Dhanraja (Broiler), Sire Line (Dual purpose), Aseel and Kadaknath (Desi). Currently, one state and one self-finance scheme is running in the Poultry section for genetic improvement and dissemination of superior birds with following objectives:
- To develop economically viable strain of poultry (chicken) for egg and meat
- To conserve and improve Desi breeds of chicken (Aseel and Kadaknath)
- To disseminate superior germplasm to farmers

Breeds/Strains maintained
HARLAY(A new layer strain for egg production)
- Average body weights attained at 20 and 40 weeks of age are 1377 g and 1745 g, respectively.
- The layer strain pullets have age at first egg of about 141 days and produce approx. 96 eggs in 280 days with average egg weight of 55 g.
BROILER- DAM LINEs
- Average body weights attained at 6, 20 and 40 weeks of age are 900 g, 2182 g and 3026 g, respectively.
- Have age at first egg of about 138 days and produce approx. 94 eggs in 280 days with average egg weight of 56 g.
CARI-BRO DHANRAJA
- Mostly preferred among farmers because of its multicolored plumage and high economic returns
- Average body weights attained at 6, 20 and 40 weeks of age are 1300 g, 2650 g and 3419 g, respectively.
- Have age at first egg of about 144 days and produce approx. 83 eggs in 280 days with average egg weight of 60 g.
SIRE LINE (Dual purpose)
- Average body weights attained at 20 and 40 weeks of age are 2079 g and 2913 g, respectively.
- Have age at first egg of about 147 days and produce approx. 84 eggs in 280 days with average egg weight of 55 g.
ASEEL
- Average body weights attained at 20 and 40 weeks of age are 1456 g and 1999 g, respectively.
- Have age at first egg of about 154 days and produce approx. 76 eggs in 280 days with average egg weight of 48 g.
KADAKNATH
- Average body weights attained at 20 and 40 weeks of age are 1149 g and 1530 g, respectively.
- Have age at first egg of about 158 days and produce approx. 78 eggs in 280 days with average egg weight of 43 g.
